I knew about the Dust Bowl from history class, but NOTHING helped me to understand it more than reading this novel. I could not believe the experiences she described.
At fourteen, Billie Jo has to endure far more than I could imagine. Her parents are poor farmers in Oklahoma at the time of the Dust Bowl. Though they were determined and worked as hard as they could, they could not overcome the obstacles that were in front of them. Through it all, Billie Jo's determination was incredible. The descriptions of the storms and her life had me horrified. This novel was written in verse and really easy to read.
This was written for a young adult audience. It was such an easy read and very compelling. You should check this out if you're into historical fiction
