What would you rate this book: 5 out of 5 Stars
Everything about this book was fantastic. There wasn’t an element i did not enjoy. Especially if you’ve read “The Glass Castle,” this novel fits right in and connections can be made between the two books. I finished this book within the course of a week which is a rare occurrence, because I never read for pleasure. The book was so enticing I couldn’t put it down and I had to find out what was going to occur next in the life of Lily Casey.
Half Broke Horses follows the life of Lily Casey, a stubborn, no nonsense girl. Growing up she learned the ways of the farm life spending her days breaking horses alongside her dad. Around 15 she ventured on her own with her horse Patches, to the city to fend for herself and get a job. There she learned to drive, fly and later met her husband Jim. Together they managed a ranch in Arizona with their two children. Rosemary always said to Jeannette Walls how she was just like her grandmother. After reading this novel the true connection can be made.
Enticing Passage: “I became known as Lily Casey, the mustang-breaking, poker-playing, horse-race-winning schoolmarm of Coconino County, and it wasn't half bad to be in place where no one had a problem with a woman having a moniker like that…”
Audience: If you thoroughly enjoyed “The Glass Castle,” you would enjoy this book just as much. Not only written about the same family, but you get to see the backstory behind the characters. For example in “Half Broke Horses,” as a reader you get to witness the moment Rosemary comes home to her mother, Lily Casey after she had met Rex Walls.
